early state (without the yellow paint on
the right side) as late as the spring of
1961, when it was documented in color
photographs of his studio. He subsequently completed the work with the
addition of the yellow sometime before
it was sent to Paris for his exhibition at
the Galerie Heinz Berggruen in
October 1961.
The title of this collage refers to
A Rose for Winter (1955), a book by the
British poet and novelist Laurie Lee
(1914–1997), who also published autobiographical accounts of his experiences during the Spanish Civil War.
In A Rose for Winter, Lee recounts his
travels in Andalusia during 1951–52.
Motherwell owned a copy of the 1960
Hogarth Press edition of this book.
