An early state of this collage, without
the ultramarine blue paint, is visible in
a studio photograph taken sometime
after mid-March 1960 (see fig. 101 in
volume 1). It was also photographed
individually in this early state (Juley
photo no. 275; j0005059). Motherwell
added the blue paint just prior to his
solo exhibition at the Sidney Janis
Gallery in April 1961.
