questionnaire Motherwell noted that
the subtitle of this collage was “For
B. H. Friedman,” it was never officially

An early state of this collage, without
the ultramarine blue paint in the upper
part of the composition, is visible in a
studio photograph taken sometime
after mid-March 1960 (see fig. 101 in
volume 1); the work in this early state
was also photographed individually
(Juley photo no. 276; j0005060). The
