comments
Motherwell inscribed the following
words in pencil on the palette paper
placed near the center of this collage:
“Kline Wed 5.30 242 W 14.” The reference is to an appointment at Franz
Kline’s New York studio.
Motherwell gave this collage to
the Pinakothek der Moderne in 1982,
but reacquired it the following year in
exchange for Vol de Nuit (c666).

comments
The pasted elements in this collage
include a small fragment of a printed
label at the center of the composition,
which reads “S. S. Pierce Co.” This
label is identifiable as part of the packing for La Sanitas tissue paper, made
by the S. S. Pierce Co. of Boston, which
Motherwell used in several other 1959
collages that were later destroyed (Juley
photo nos. 103 and 227; j0004895 and
j0005014).

This collage is known only from
a black-and-white photograph (Juley
photo no. 121; j0004913). We do not
know whether this work still exists in
the form illustrated here.

comments
The inscription “H for love” written
in Motherwell’s hand along the bottom
center of this work refers to Helen
Frankenthaler. A similar inscription
appears in another 1959 collage
(see c100).
This work is known only through
a black-and-white photograph (Juley
photo no. 124; j0004916). We do not
know whether this work still exists in
