The title under which this work
was exhibited at the Sidney Janis
Gallery in 1959, An Artist’s Collage, is
inscribed on the verso of the work but
not in Motherwell’s hand. It was first
shown with its present title in 1961.

photographed in that early state in the
fall (Juley photo no. 177; j0004867).
The collage element at the left center
is from the same cover for a Lefranc
drawing block that was used in
The French Drawing Block (c82).
Motherwell reworked this collage
before it was exhibited at the Sidney
Janis Gallery in March 1959.
