untitled work. The Williams College

In 1984, the museum’s registrar wrote
to Motherwell regarding a small collage
element that was missing from the
lower right part of the composition.
On December 19, 1984, Motherwell’s
curator replied on his behalf: “I have
discussed the problem of the missing
collage element with Robert and he
feels that the collage should be left as it
is and that the glue area actually ‘constitutes a subtle form alongside some
very definitive ones.’ To eliminate it
would leave the picture unbalanced and
to restore it is impossible. In addition,
he would like the work to be titled
‘Garden of Delights’ ” (Dedalus
Foundation Archives). The “delights”
of the title probably refer in part to the
collage elements, which include labels
from 4711 Kölnisch Eau de Cologne,
Callard & Bowser’s butterscotch candies, and English Ovals cigarettes.
