An early state of this work—in which
the ground was divided into sections
of blue, red, and yellow—served as a
study for the final version of a large
painting on canvas, Hollow Men’s Cave
(p1183), which Motherwell had begun
in 1986 and completed around 1990.
Later in 1990, Motherwell revised this
comments
This work was used as the model for a
1990 collage, Memory of Delos (c866),
and for a 1991 print, Delos (Engberg and
Banach 2003, no. 525). Both the title
and the imagery in these works refer to
the stone phalluses on the Stoivadeion
temple dedicated to Dionysos on the
Greek island of Delos.
