comments
This work is one of a number of studies
that Motherwell made for his largescale painting The Grand Inquisitor
(p1182), which at one time was titled
Catalonia. An early version of this
work, which was painted with ochre
along the bottom edge, was exhibited
at Knoedler & Company in April
1989 under its original title, Study for
“Catalonia” II. After the work was
returned to Motherwell in October of
that year, he extended the black painted
areas to the bottom edges of the
composition.
The titles of both this and a related
work (p1144) were changed by the
artist to Study for The Grand Inquisitor
in accordance with his retitling of the
large Catalonia painting in 1990.
