comments
The title of this painting refers to the
Trojan warrior from The Iliad, who
was slain by Achilles. On the verso,
Motherwell titled it Lament for Hektor
Slain, and he sent it under that title to
the Homeric Themes exhibition at the
Long Point Gallery, Provincetown, in
August 1987. This work, however, was
also referred to as Hector’s Corpse on
a press release for that same exhibition;
it is unclear whether this second title
was erroneous or Motherwell had
supplied it as well.
