Placed among the pasted elements
of this collage are a mailing label
and brown paper packaging from
Imprimeries Réunis, S.A., Lausanne,
the publishers of the art journal L’Oeil.
The Swiss postmark is dated July 17,
1956, and the package shows both
Motherwell’s New York address and the
address to which it was forwarded in
Provincetown: 2 Allerton Street, where
he spent the summer of 1956.
This collage was reproduced on
the poster for Motherwell’s first solo
exhibition at the Sidney Janis Gallery,
in May 1957.
