Motherwell set the composition of this
work in 1979, but the central figure 4
form was then painted in pink; that
version of the work was exhibited at the
Long Point Gallery, Provincetown, in
September 1979 under the title Mexican
Bride. In 1990 Motherwell repainted
the figure 4 with ochre and retitled the
work Mexican Prison. Regarding
Motherwell’s use of the figure 4, see the
