This work was originally number 7 in
the Drunk with Turpentine series (see
the Comments for w542). Motherwell
retitled it Spanish Wall No. 1 just prior to
its inclusion in an exhibition at the
Museum of Modern Art, New York, in
December 1987, along with two other
works designated as Spanish Wall No. 2
and Spanish Wall No. 4 (w629 and w630).
There is no known work designated as
number 3 in the Spanish Wall series.
