The artist dated four paintings
on paper “6 May 79” and inscribed
letter designations on the recto of three
of these works that shared a similar
composition. Two works, this one and
Drunk with Turpentine (w599), were
given the letter B, and Untitled (w600)
was given the letter C. A fourth work
done on the same day but unrelated
to the Drunk with Turpentine series,
Untitled (Elegy Study) (w632), was not
given a letter designation.
Motherwell had also given letter
designations to five related Drunk with
Turpentine works done on March 7,
1979 (see the Comments for w543).
