comments
This work, dated by the artist on the
recto to January 1979, is one of the earliest dated works from the Drunk with
Turpentine series, but Motherwell did
not give it a series number. (Another
work, Drunk with Turpentine No. 30, was
dated “29 Jan 79”; see w564.) In 1981
this work was used as the basis for a
large-scale painting, Stephen’s Iron
Crown (p1030); posthumously, it came
to be known as Drunk with Turpentine
Series (Study for Stephen’s Iron Crown).
Motherwell also based a 1982 print,
Stephen’s Iron Crown Etched, on this
image (Engberg and Banach 2003,
no. 292).
