This work, dated “29 Jan 79” by the
artist on the recto, is one of the earliest
dated works from the Drunk with
Turpentine series; an unnumbered
work in the series, Drunk with
Turpentine (w583) was dated “Jan 79.”
Motherwell’s numbering of the works
in the series, however, did not reflect
the chronological sequence in which
the works were created.
