comments
Motherwell painted this work in
black and white over an impression of
his 1975 lithograph Spanish Elegy I
(Engberg and Banach 2003, no. 174).
The signature on the lower right is
from the original impression of the
print, and the word archive, also
w537
inscribed in the print, is obscured by
the black paint. This painting was later
scaled up and became the basis for a
39¼ x 61–inch lithograph done in 1989,
Elegy Study I (Engberg and Banach
2003, no. 488).
