This 1973 work is one of a number of
paintings that Motherwell executed in
black acrylic paint applied over screenprinted trial proofs he had created in
1970 with Christopher Prater at the
Kelpra Studio, London (w429–w449).
The trial proofs, which contained red
and blue linear forms, had been pulled
for four print editions that were never
published. Motherwell’s London Series I
and II (Engberg and Banach 2003, nos.
89–98) had been done at the Kelpra
Studio during that same period.
The artist’s initials in the upper
left corners of these 1973 paintings are
part of the original 1970 screen-print
images and are not unique signatures;
but then Motherwell added the 1973
dates by hand.
