comments
This painting served as the maquette
for a tapestry commissioned by
Westinghouse Broadcasting in
Philadelphia, and fabricated by Gloria
F. Ross Tapestries. Motherwell also created four other paintings on paper as
studies for this tapestry (w390–w393).
This painting, although not titled as
part of the numbered Tapestry Study
series, was in fact the first work done in
that series. This group of five paintings
was a precursor to what would later
become known as the Samurai series of
1974 (see the Comments for p775).
