This is the first work in the Africa Suite
series, paintings on paper (w342–w352)
that were done as studies for silkscreen
prints given the same title (see Engberg
and Banach 2003, nos. 69–78). In fact,
Motherwell took the paintings on paper
with him when he went to London to
work on the prints between February
24 and March 10, 1970. These paintings on paper sometimes include taped
or pasted papers that Motherwell utilized not as true collage elements but as
a means of masking sections of the
image in the process of composing the
imagery for the prints. All of the works
in this series are therefore included here
as paintings on paper rather than as
collages.
This work served as the model for
Africa Suite: Africa 1 (Engberg and
Banach 2003, no. 69).
