comments
Motherwell did this small painting on
paper as a sketch for a poster commissioned for the dedication ceremony
for the new location of the Juilliard
School on October 26, 1969. But he
eventually chose to base the final
screen-printed design, Juilliard School
(Engberg and Banach 2003, no. 64), on
a collage that had been created in 1969
(see the Comments for c265).
The inscription “juilliard school”
and the sketched-in musical notes on
the recto are in Motherwell’s hand.
