comments
The title of this work, Open with
Elegy, was given around 1981, when
Motherwell, at the request of the owner
520
of the work, signed it on the verso and
added the approximated date of 1966.
This work, however, was almost certainly among the numerous similar
Elegies painted on paper roughly measuring 6 x 8 inches that Motherwell
painted in 1968, after he had begun the
Open series. The isolation of the Elegy
image within a linear Open form drawn
in graphite further links this work to
other paintings on paper done in 1968.
