comments
The date of this work is uncertain. In
1967, Motherwell utilized the figure 4
motif, first seen in his paintings on paper
as early as 1960 (see w104), on pages
from the Art Bulletin (see w246 and
w247). The scale and colors of this work
are similar to Motherwell’s 1967 Oval
painting series (see p381–p388). The
incised lines at the left and along the top
are reminiscent of some of the works in
the Alberti Suite (p522–p528). They
may have been added in 1969 or 1970.

comments
The date assigned to this work is based
on its relation to a number of the artist’s 1967 paintings that contain similar
colors and oval forms (see p381–p388).

comments
In 1967 Motherwell created a series of
untitled works composed of gestural
forms painted on pages torn from the
March 1967 issue of the Art Bulletin.
The entire group is visible in a photograph of Motherwell’s studio taken
by Ugo Mulas in November 1967
(reproduced in Arnason 1977b, p. 199,
