Frankenthaler took from December 18,
1965, to January 3, 1966. The central
motif in this painting, of triangle and
ovals, is related to Motherwell’s 1958
series of drawings titled Madrid, and to
the 1966 Madrid Suite lithographs that
were based on those drawings (Engberg
and Banach 2003, nos. 21–30).

black-and-white photograph of this
picture (Nelson photo no. 25602). This
work was returned to Motherwell from
the Marlborough-Gerson Gallery in
1972, but its present whereabouts are
unknown. We do not know whether it
