comments
An early version of this work, painted in
1965, was exhibited a number of times
between 1965 and 1970. A photograph
of the artist’s studio shows it still in
that early form as late as April 1975.
Motherwell subsequently revised the
work, extending the black painted areas
to the upper areas of the composition.
Our reproduction comes from a
Polaroid photograph of this painting on
the storage racks in Motherwell’s
Greenwich studio.
