This work is known only from an
early black-and-white photograph
(Juley photo no. 322; j0005107), and
may have subsequently been painted
over. On the back of a print of this photograph in the Dedalus Foundation
Archives is a written note that states:
“May have been changed.”
The title refers to the main character in Alfred Jarry’s play Ubu Roi. In
1958 Motherwell had done a brush and
ink drawing in which the title “Père
Ubu Roi” was written across the top
part of the image (Juley photo no. 143;
j0004934).
