An early, very different version of this
work appears in a 1960 studio photograph (see fig. 101 in volume 1).
Motherwell subsequently painted over
most of that composition, and the
work appears in its completed form in
a studio photograph taken during the
summer of 1963 (see Arnason 1982,
p. 152, pl. 191). Traces of the original
composition are still partially visible in
the pentimenti.
