comments
Our reproduction comes from an
early black-and-white photograph of
this work (Juley photo no. 256;
j0005040). A print of this photograph
in the Dedalus Foundation Archives is
labeled “Oil on paper with incision.”
This same note is also said to be on a
label attached to the backing board of
the work. And indeed there is a deep
semicircular incision cut into the white
paperboard support, which runs under
the black forms.
The inscription on the verso of this
work is said to include a dedication by
Motherwell to Bernard and Rebecca
Reis. Bernard Reis was Motherwell’s
accountant.
