comments
This collage was made in East Hampton
in July 1946. Motherwell had met the
composer John Cage in 1942. In the fall
of 1946, Motherwell attended rehearsals for a performance of Cage’s work at
Carnegie Hall and invited Cage to be the
music editor of the journal Possibilities.
