This work relates directly to the Madrid
series of drawings that Motherwell made
the night before he left Madrid for SaintJean-de-Luz in June 1958. The shellac was
probably added in Saint-Jean-de-Luz.
A note on the studio card for this
work says that it was destroyed in January
1984. Our reproduction comes from a
Polaroid photograph. We do not know
whether this work still exists in the form
illustrated here.
