An early state of this painting, completed in Saint-Jean-de-Luz during the
summer of 1958, is visible in a studio
photograph dated December 1958 that
was used in a poster for Motherwell’s
exhibition at the Sidney Janis Gallery in
March 1959 (Juley photo no. 78;
j0004871). In that early state the area
around the figure was darker, and it
was signed “RM 58” in the upper right
corner (Juley photo no. 176; j0004966).
