comments
Motherwell painted an early version of
this work during the summer of 1958 in
Saint-Jean-de-Luz, and it was shown
under its original title, Bull No. 6, at his
solo exhibition at the Sidney Janis
Gallery in March 1959 (see fig. 78 in
volume 1). Following this exhibition,
Motherwell continued to revise the picture, extending the black paint on the
left side and adjusting the contours of
the black paint in the lower left corner.
It was completed and retitled Iberia
No. 15 shortly before being sent to São
Paulo in the fall of 1961.
