1959 solo exhibition at the Sidney
Janis Gallery (see fig. 78 in volume 1)
reveals that this work was shown rotated
180 degrees (i.e., upside down) from its
present orientation, contrary to the
orientation of both the artist’s signatures on the recto. It is unclear from the
exhibition photograph whether the
work had been signed at the time, or
whether Motherwell reoriented the
work and signed it at a later date. The
Janis Gallery records indicate that the
work was sold directly from the show,
but the 1974 Sotheby Parke Bernet
catalogue orients the work as we reproduce it here.

early black-and-white photograph of
this work (Juley photo no. 160;
