comments
Motherwell painted the first version of
this work in Saint-Jean-de-Luz during
the summer of 1958, and it was photographed that fall (Juley photo no. 136;
j0004927). The work was revised by
extending the blacks along the right
side some time before March 1959,
when it was exhibited at the Sidney
Janis Gallery. Since the present whereabouts of this work are unknown, it is
not possible to say whether or not it

may have been subsequently revised, as
Bull No. 1 (w60) had been, following
the Janis Gallery exhibition.
Our reproduction of this work has
been extracted from an installation
photograph of Motherwell’s March
1959 exhibition at the Sidney Janis
Gallery (see fig. 78 in volume 1).
