Motherwell painted this work in SaintJean-de-Luz during the summer of
1958. It later served as a model for the
initial composition of his 1966 painting
New England Elegy Mural (Second
Variation) (p367), and for the 1984
print At the Edge (Engberg and Banach
2003, no. 345).
