Motherwell painted this work in
Saint-Jean-de-Luz during the summer
of 1958.
It was erroneously exhibited as
Two Figures No. 4 at the Sidney Janis
Gallery in 1959, an error compounded
by the fact that an inscription on the
verso, in handwriting other than the
artist’s, designates it as “2 fIGures #5.”
The Janis Gallery label on the verso
nonetheless clearly lists it as number 6,
and it was sold as such.
