comments
This work is executed on a page from a
spiral-bound Strathmore sketchbook;
unusually for Motherwell, he had it
framed with the side holes showing. It
was erroneously given a 1949 date
when it was exhibited at the Parrish
Art Museum in July 1980; the title
Elegy Sketch was given to it at that time.
It almost certainly dates from 1958,
based on its similarities with other
paintings on paper done by Motherwell
that year.
