This is the last Elegy painting that
Motherwell inscribed with a Roman
numeral. Its composition is related to
Elegy for the Spanish Republic XXXV
(p168), which was completed in 1958.
As evidenced in this work and other
Elegy paintings from this period, the
numbering of the Elegy paintings on
paper was not chronologically sequential. See, for example, the Elegies given
the numbers 44, 45, and 50 (w108,
w109, and w32 respectively).
