According to information from the
records of the André Emmerich
Gallery, there is an unfinished painting
on the verso of this work, but we have
not been able to verify this (André
Emmerich Gallery records and André
Emmerich papers, Archives of
American Art).

comments
Motherwell and his wife Maria traveled
to Florida with William and Ethel
Baziotes in April 1945, and stayed for
approximately one month. His stated
interest in traveling to Florida was
the experience of “southern light”
(Museum of Modern Art exh. cat.
1965, p. 74). Motherwell painted this
work during that trip, and the word
Florida, which is said to be inscribed
on the verso of the work and which
appears on the back of a black-andwhite photograph of it, may have been
meant as its title.
