comments
This collage includes most of a page of
a manuscript of the conductor’s score
for Purgatory, an unpublished work for
large orchestra written around 1987
by Chambliss Giobbi, the son of
Motherwell’s friend, the artist Edward
Giobbi. Chambliss Giobbi recalls having given Motherwell this manuscript
in 1987 or 1988. According to the elder
Giobbi, this was the last collage completed by Motherwell (see Forman
1991d).
The title, which refers to Wallace
Stevens’s poem “The Man with the
Blue Guitar” (1937) and to Picasso’s
Old Guitarist (see fig. 151 in volume 1),
was also used for The Blue Guitar (To
Wallace Stevens) (c877).
