This collage was part of the Walls
of Europe series that Motherwell
described in a letter to Dorothy Miller
dated May 22, 1946, as a subgroup in
the “political” works that he was working on at the time (see “Writings by
the Artist,” in the Bibliography).
Although this collage has been dated as
early as 1943, it appears to have been
done in 1946, based on its style, subject, and the date assigned to it during
its early exhibition history.
