This collage includes a fragment of a
1990 print, Seaside Studio (Engberg and
Banach 2003, no. 495). The title refers
to both the Wallace Stevens poem “The
Man with the Blue Guitar” (1937) and
Picasso’s Old Guitarist (see fig. 151 in
volume 1), which had inspired the
Stevens poem. Motherwell also gave
this title to another collage (c889).
This work served as the model for
a 1991 print, Untitled (Engberg and
Banach 2003, no. 530), one of the last
prints on which Motherwell worked.
