An early version of this collage,
composed on a red ground, was consigned to Knoedler & Company from
February to June 1989. After it was
returned to Motherwell, he repainted
the ground a tan color and made additions in blue and white oil pastel. It was
consigned again to Knoedler in October
of that same year in its final form.

Carné’s Les Enfants du paradis (Children
of Paradise), which was filmed during
the Nazi occupation of France and first
shown in public in 1945.
