This collage includes a fragment of a
1984 print, At the Edge (Engberg and
Banach 2003, no. 345). It was begun
in 1985 and exhibited at Knoedler &
Company in April 1986 with the title
Collaged Wall IV. After it was returned
to Motherwell in 1988, he added the
yellow painted areas and blue lines, and
extended the blacks to the lower right
half of the ground. The collage was
retitled Goya’s Dog when it was consigned to Knoedler again at the beginning of April 1989, but the title was
changed to Goya’s Dog II by the time it
was exhibited later that month.
A 1975 painting was titled Goya’s
Dog (Sketch) (p861).

This collage includes a fragment of a
1985 print, Burning Sun (Engberg and
Banach 2003, no. 357). Although
Motherwell signed and dated the work
1989, a studio slide taken in December
1988 shows the work already in its
final form.
