of sheet music from Arthur Berger’s

(1972) and from Mozart’s Don
Giovanni (k. 527).

The inscription at the lower right
indicates that Motherwell first thought
of the works in the Red and Black series
to be “unique collage prints.”
A reproduction of this collage was
used on the album cover for An Arthur
Berger Retrospective, a recording of
Berger’s music issued by New World
Records.
Motherwell and Berger had been
friends since they met at Harvard in
1937; see the Comments for Collaged
Wall VI (for Arthur Berger), c737.
