This collage includes fragments of a
1985 print, Black Open, and from the
1986 Alphabet Series (Engberg and
Banach 2003, nos. 358 and 375). The
sheet music is from Arthur Berger’s
Trio for Guitar, Violin, and Piano
(1972). This collage was exhibited in
an early state at Knoedler & Company
in April 1988. Motherwell added the
painted black brush marks after it was
returned to him that May.
