This is the first numbered collage in
Motherwell’s Red and Black series,
which he worked on in 1987 and 1988.
Printed aquatint proofs of an image
derived from his 1975 collage Pas de
Deux No. 1 (c536) served as the paper
ground and support for all the works
in the series. Upon this ground,
Motherwell arranged collage elements
from various sources—mostly cut and
torn fragments of proofs of his own
solo exhibitions
Knoedler & Company, New York, April
1988, cat. no. 6.
