comments
This collage contains wood veneer and
a piece of one of the German wrapping
papers that Motherwell had been using
in his collages since 1943. An erased
inscription under the signature reads
“Robert Motherwell 45,” but upside
down, indicating that at some point in
the process of creating this work
Motherwell rotated it 180 degrees.
The numbers in the titles of this
work and of Collage No. 1 (c21) are
related to the numbering system of the
Samuel M. Kootz Gallery; these were
the first two Motherwell works assigned
Kootz Gallery inventory numbers
(Kootz nos. 501 and 502 respectively).
