comments
An early version of this work was
begun in 1966 with an ochre ground
and fragments from a January 5, 1967,
issue of the Manchester Guardian
Weekly. As with other works in the
Guardian series (see the Comments
for c170 and c742), Motherwell revised
this work in 1984–86. This revision
involved adding a fragment of a 1984
print, At the Edge (Engberg and Banach
2003, no. 345), and the piece of sheet
music near the center. In 1986 he
repainted the ground blue. Although
some other revised works from the
Guardian series were given new titles,
there is no record of Motherwell changing the title of this collage.
The sheet music is from the manuscript of an unidentified Stabat Mater
that Motherwell used in a number
of other collages (see the Comments
for c687).
