Rondo (After Mozart). Shortly after the
work was returned to Motherwell that
August, he painted black over much
of the composition and retitled it (most
of the fragment from Wanderers is still
visible). The completed collage was
consigned to Knoedler & Company
that October.

An early version of this collage, signed
and dated 1980, contained the large
black paper form and sheet music set
on a simple blue-gray ground. That
version was consigned to Knoedler &
Company from November 1983 to April
1985. Motherwell revised the work in
January 1986, adding the red, blue,
green, and yellow painted areas and
painting over the original signature. It
was consigned to Knoedler again that
February.
The sheet music is from Mozart’s
Sonata movement in G minor, Allegro,
for piano (k. 312).
