comments
This collage incorporates fragments of
a 1985 print, Perpetual Summer (Engberg
and Banach 2003, no. 361), along with
fragments of sheet music from Arthur
Berger’s Trio for Guitar, Violin, and
Piano (1972). Motherwell met Berger
(1912–2003) at Harvard in 1937;
they were in Paris together in 1938,
and remained lifelong friends. Like
Motherwell, Berger studied with David
W. Prall at Harvard, and it was Berger
who suggested that Motherwell move
to New York to study with Meyer
Schapiro.

An early version of this collage contained several pages of sheet music
from Mozart’s Rondo in D, for
piano (k. 485), and a fragment from
Motherwell’s 1985 print Wanderers
(Engberg and Banach 2003, no. 364).
